Spain Visa Itinerary Sample: 12-Day Day-by-Day Plan (2026)
A complete 12-day Spain itinerary for a Schengen visa application — Madrid, Seville, Granada and Barcelona — with the nights count, transport lines and the Spanish consulate rules it has to satisfy.
A Spanish consulate reads your itinerary to answer three questions: is Spain really your main destination, does the route make physical sense, and does the money in your bank statement cover it. This page gives you a complete 12-day sample that answers all three, written the way BLS International and VFS centres for Spain expect to see it. Copy the structure, then replace every hotel, date and train with your own bookings.
01Key takeaways
- Spain must be the country where you spend the most nights, or you must apply elsewhere (Article 5 of the Visa Code).
- Spain applies one of the highest daily money requirements in the Schengen area: 2026 figure (Consulate General, Washington). A flat EUR 1,099 applies to stays of 9 days or more.
- Every city change needs a named train, bus or flight — Spain is large, and an officer will notice a Seville-to-Barcelona move with no transport line.
- Book refundable hotels for every night; do not use reservations you have no intention of keeping.
- The itinerary, cover letter and flight reservation must show the same dates down to the day.
02Who this sample fits
This plan suits a first-time applicant on a tourism visit: 12 nights, all in Spain, entering and leaving through Madrid. A single-country trip is the easiest file to defend, because jurisdiction is never in doubt and the officer only has to check one set of distances. If you are adding Portugal or France, keep Spain as the country with the most nights or your application belongs at another consulate.

The hotel names above are deliberately fictional. Use the real property names and booking references from your own confirmations — the officer matches them line by line.
04Why this route reads well to a Spanish consulate
The geography is honest. Madrid to Seville, Seville to Granada, Granada to Barcelona and back to Madrid is a loop a real traveller would take. Each move has a realistic travel time and leaves the rest of the day free. Officers are trained to flag routes that cover more ground than one person could physically manage.
Fixed-time sights are named. The Alhambra, the Real Alcázar and the Sagrada Família all require timed tickets that sell out. Naming them signals planning, and you can attach the ticket confirmations if you already have them.
Entry and exit are the same airport. Flying in and out of Madrid keeps the flight reservation simple and makes the round-trip return obvious — the strongest single signal that you will leave before your visa expires.
05Spanish consulate details that affect the itinerary
Money per day. Spain sets one of the strictest subsistence requirements of any Schengen state. 2026 figure (Consulate General, Washington). A flat EUR 1,099 applies to stays of 9 days or more. For a 12-night trip, the flat figure applies, so your statements should show at least that amount clearly available on top of the cost of the flights and hotels you list.
Staying with friends or family. If any night is with a private host in Spain, the host requests a carta de invitación from the local police station. It replaces the hotel booking for those nights; the itinerary should show the host's address in the accommodation column.
Appointment providers. Depending on where you apply, Spain uses BLS International or VFS Global. Neither will correct a mismatched itinerary at the counter — fix dates before you book the appointment.
Visa fee. The standard adult fee is €90 (€45 for children aged 6 to 11), plus the provider's service charge.
06Common mistakes on Spain itineraries
- Listing Ibiza or Mallorca with no ferry or flight. Islands need a transport line like any other city change.
- Counting the arrival day wrongly. If you land at 07:40, Day 1 is that date; the night of Day 1 is your first night.
- Adding Lisbon "for a day" without showing it. Every border crossing inside Schengen still belongs in the itinerary, even without passport control.
- Hotel names that don't match the booking. Use the exact property name from the confirmation, not a shortened form.
07Turning this sample into your own file
A sample shows the shape; your file has to match your own bookings. Our generator builds the cover letter, day-by-day itinerary and personalised checklist for Spain from one set of inputs, so the dates and nights count stay identical across every page. Build your visa file, or read the general Schengen visa itinerary template and the cover letter sample first.

Frequently asked questions
- How many nights do I need in Spain to apply at the Spanish consulate?
- There is no fixed minimum. Spain must be the country where you spend the most nights of the trip. If nights are equal between Spain and another country, you apply to the country you enter first.
- Can I include Portugal in a Spain visa itinerary?
- Yes, as long as Spain still has more nights than Portugal. Show the crossing with its own transport line and the Portuguese accommodation for those nights.
- Do I need to book Alhambra tickets before applying?
- It is not required, but naming timed-entry sights and attaching confirmations you already hold makes the plan more credible. Only attach tickets you have actually bought.
