No — you don't need a Schengen visa

Visa-free

Good news — Tonga passport holders don't need a Schengen visa

You can travel to all 29 Schengen countries visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period, for tourism, business, or visiting friends and family. Just bring a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure and proof of funds, accommodation, and return travel.

Already been to Schengen this year?

The 90 days are counted in a rolling 180-day window — check your remaining days before booking.

Planning to stay longer than 90 days?

For studies, work, retirement, or remote work, you'll need a national long-stay (Type D) visa from the specific country.

What the rule is based on

Short-stay entry rules for the 29 Schengen states are set by Council Regulation (EU) 2018/1806. Tonga is listed in Annex II, so its passport holders may enter without a visa for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. The exemption covers tourism, family visits and business — it does not cover paid work or stays beyond 90 days, which need a national long-stay visa.

ETIAS becomes available in Q4 2026: a €20 online authorisation valid for up to 3 years and tied to your passport. A transitional period follows launch; carriers must check it before boarding around April 2027.
