1. Is Germany your main destination?

You apply to Germany only if it is where you will spend the most nights — or, with equal nights, where you first enter the Schengen area. Applying to Germany for appointment convenience when another country is your main destination is a jurisdiction error.

3. What Germany looks for

  • Formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung)

If a host in Germany will cover your costs, they can sign a formal obligation at their local foreigners' authority (Residence Act, section 68). It is optional evidence of funding, not required when you pay for the trip yourself. Source

  • Employment and leave

Employed applicants usually show an employer letter confirming position, salary and approved leave for the travel dates. Source

4. Core document checklist

Build your Germany file. SchengenDoc writes the cover letter, itinerary and checklist addressed to the Germany consulate.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Verpflichtungserklärung for a German Schengen visa?

Only if someone in Germany is covering your costs and you rely on that as your proof of funds. If you fund the trip yourself, your own bank statements are the evidence.

Where do I apply for a German short-stay visa?

At the channel the German mission for your country of residence names — VFS Global, TLScontact or the mission itself, depending on the country.

Staying longer than 90 days? See the Germany long-stay visa guide.
