No Schengen Visa Appointments Available? What to Do (2026)
Why VFS Global, TLScontact and BLS calendars show no slots, what the EU Visa Code says about appointment waiting times, and how to be ready the moment a slot opens.
By the SchengenDoc editorial team · Checked against the EU Visa Code (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009), European Commission visa statistics and official consulate checklists. How we verify
An empty appointment calendar is the most common roadblock Schengen applicants hit — in the UK, the Gulf, India, Turkey and beyond. This guide explains why it happens, what the rules say, and what you can actually do. It does not promise a slot: nobody legitimate can.
01Key takeaways
- Book only through the link on the consulate's own website. Agents and "slot sellers" have no special access.
- The EU Visa Code says that where an appointment is required, it should as a rule take place within two weeks of the request (Article 9(2)) — but busy posts often cannot meet that in peak season.
- You can apply up to six months before travel (Article 9(1)). Starting early is the single most effective move.
- Have your full file ready before you book, so a short-notice slot is never wasted.
02Why the calendar is empty
Visa centres such as VFS Global, TLScontact and BLS International only open the appointments the consulate gives them capacity for. When demand exceeds that capacity — summer, Christmas, major events — calendars fill as soon as slots are released. Some embassies publish how they release slots; for example, Germany's embassy in Harare says new appointments are released regularly at times that are not announced, and that the best chance is to look well in advance, up to six months before travel (German Embassy Harare). Others release on a rolling basis. Check your consulate's page for its own rule rather than relying on forum rumours.
03Make sure you are booking with the right consulate
You apply to the consulate of your main destination — the country where you spend the most nights, or, if nights are equal, where you first enter (Visa Code Article 5). Booking with the wrong country to "get a faster slot" is a common reason for applications being returned or refused. If your trip genuinely has a different main destination with more availability, change the trip, not the paperwork.
04What you can do while you wait
- Check the official calendar at different times of day, logged in to your own account. Never share your login with an agent.
- Look at every centre in your consular jurisdiction. Many countries have several cities; you may only use the ones that cover where you legally live.
- Ask about short-notice or cancelled slots only through the official channel listed on the embassy page.
- Plan flexible bookings. Use refundable hotels and a verifiable flight reservation rather than paid, non-refundable tickets.
- Contact the consulate in genuine emergencies (illness or death of a relative, urgent business) through the contact form on its website — some posts handle urgent cases separately.
05Avoid slot scams
Booking an appointment on the official system is free; you pay the visa fee and the provider's service fee. Anyone selling "guaranteed", "VIP" or "priority" slots outside the official portal is not authorised, and paying them puts your personal data at risk. Our booking guides for VFS Global, TLScontact and BLS International show how to start from the official link.
06Get your file ready before the slot appears
When a slot finally opens it can be days away. The applicants who succeed are the ones who already have the cover letter, day-by-day itinerary, proof of accommodation, insurance and bank statements prepared and consistent with each other. Build your complete visa file — $19 now, so your file is finished before the calendar opens. Not sure what papers you need? Use the free document checklist.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there a rule on how long I should wait for a Schengen appointment?
- Article 9(2) of the EU Visa Code says that where an appointment is required it should, as a rule, take place within two weeks of the request. In practice busy consulates may not meet this in peak periods.
- Can I apply to a different Schengen country because it has slots?
- Only if that country is genuinely your main destination. You must apply to the consulate of the country where you will spend the most nights, or where you enter first if nights are equal.
- Should I pay an agent for an appointment?
- No. Agents have no special access to appointment systems. Booking through the official portal is free apart from the visa and service fees.
