Schengen Visa With a Sponsor, as a Freelancer or Remote Worker (2026)
No payslips? How sponsored applicants, freelancers, self-employed people and remote workers can prove funds and ties for a Schengen short-stay visa.
By the SchengenDoc editorial team · Checked against the EU Visa Code (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009), European Commission visa statistics and official consulate checklists. How we verify
Consulate checklists are often written for salaried employees: employer letter, payslips, leave approval. If you are sponsored, freelance, self-employed or working remotely, you can still build a strong file — you just have to show the same things with different evidence. Always check your consulate's own checklist; requirements differ by destination and country of application.
01What every consulate is checking
Whatever your situation, the officer is assessing the same points under the EU Visa Code (Articles 14 and 21): the purpose of the trip, sufficient means for the stay and the return, and your intention to leave before the visa expires. Your documents replace payslips, they don't skip the question.
02If someone else is paying (sponsor)
Article 14(4) of the Visa Code lets member states require proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation, often on a national form. Typical evidence:
- A signed sponsorship declaration stating who pays, for what, and your relationship. Some countries require an official form — for example, Germany's formal obligation (Verpflichtungserklärung) or France's attestation d'accueil for private stays. Check the destination consulate's page.
- The sponsor's bank statements and proof of income, plus their ID or residence permit.
- Proof of the relationship (birth or marriage certificate, invitation letter).
- Your own ties to home: studies, family, property, a job or business.
Your cover letter should name the sponsor, the relationship and what they cover, and still explain why you will return.
03If you are freelance or self-employed
Replace the employer letter with proof that your work exists and pays:
- Business registration or tax registration, and recent tax returns.
- Client contracts or invoices and matching bank statements showing those payments arriving.
- A short statement of your ongoing commitments after the trip (contracts, bookings, clients).
- Personal and, where relevant, business account statements that show the trip is affordable.
04If you work remotely for a foreign company
A short-stay Schengen visa is for visits; it is not a work permit. If you will just keep answering emails while on holiday, say so honestly, but do not describe the trip as work. Provide:
- An employment contract or letter from your employer confirming your role, salary and permission for the leave.
- Bank statements showing salary arriving regularly.
- Evidence of your residence and ties where you live now.
If you want to live and work remotely from a Schengen country for months, you need a national long-stay visa such as a digital nomad visa, not a Schengen visa — see our Spain digital nomad visa guide.
05Make the documents tell one story
Non-standard income is where inconsistencies show up most: invoice totals that don't match deposits, a sponsor's letter with different dates from the itinerary. SchengenDoc asks about sponsorship and employment type and writes the cover letter to match. Build your complete visa file — $19. Check what papers you need with the free document checklist.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I get a Schengen visa if someone else pays for my trip?
- Yes. Consulates accept sponsorship, but you need the sponsor's declaration, financial proof and proof of your relationship, and some countries require an official national form. You must still show ties to home.
- What do freelancers show instead of payslips?
- Business or tax registration, recent tax returns, client contracts or invoices, and bank statements showing those payments arriving.
- Can I work remotely on a Schengen tourist visa?
- A short-stay visa is for visits, not work. To live and work remotely from a Schengen country, you need a national long-stay visa such as a digital nomad visa.
