Italy Digital Nomad Visa — remote-work residency in 2026

The Italian Digital Nomad Visa (visto per nomadi digitali / lavoratori altamente qualificati in modalità remota) is the national long-stay entry visa for non-EU highly skilled remote workers employed by or providing services to non-Italian entities. It was created by Law 25/2022 (Decreto Sostegni-ter) and made operational by the Ministerial Decree of 29 February 2024, in force from 4 April 2024. The visa leads to a permesso di soggiorno per lavoro autonomo — nomade digitale, renewable, and opens the standard EU-residency pathway after 5 years.

What is the Italy Digital Nomad Visa?

The Italy DNV was established in law by Article 6-quinquies of Decree-Law 4/2022 (converted with amendments as Law 25/2022) and became operational when the Ministerial Decree of 29 February 2024 was published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale and entered into force on 4 April 2024. Prior to that date the visa was legally defined but not applyable — consulates now accept files.

The DNV is reserved for highly skilled remote workers: either employees of a non-Italian employer, or self-employed persons providing services to non-Italian clients, whose activity qualifies under the highly skilled worker framework (recognised university degree, professional qualification, or ≥ 5 years of relevant experience). Applicants must have carried out this remote activity for at least 6 months before applying.

The permesso di soggiorno issued on the DNV is typically valid for 1 year and renewable in 1-year blocks as long as the underlying remote-work conditions continue to be met. Family members (spouse, minor children) may be included at the same stage under the standard family-reunification rules once the main applicant meets the income and accommodation floors.

Financial requirements — 2026

Last verified: 2026-07-13 · figures cross-checked against the cited source on each row.

The DNV income floor is pegged to 3× the annual minimum income that exempts from Italian healthcare co-payment; the €28,000/year figure reflects the 2024–2026 reference. The exact euro figure can shift year-to-year with the underlying healthcare threshold — verify the current number with the Italian consulate at the time of application.

The motivation / cover letter

The DNV motivation letter needs to establish three specific points the Italian consulate reviews: (1) the applicant qualifies as a highly skilled worker under Italy's highly qualified framework; (2) the activity is genuinely remote and carried out for a non-Italian employer or non-Italian clients; and (3) the applicant meets the income, insurance, accommodation and 6-month experience floors set by the 29 February 2024 Ministerial Decree. Files that read as generic remote-work applications without naming the DNV framework are commonly returned for completion.

Step-by-step application

  1. 1
Confirm you meet the highly skilled test

Recognised university degree, regulated-profession qualification, or ≥ 5 years of specialised experience in the same field. Ambiguous roles (generalist customer support, low-skill remote work) do not qualify under the DNV framework.

  2. 2
Document 6 months of prior remote work

Payslips, invoices, contracts, employer letters — all showing remote execution of the same activity for at least the 6 months preceding the application. Recent career changes to a remote role need to have crossed the 6-month mark before you file.

  3. 3
    Assemble income proof ≥ €28,000/year

Tax returns, bank statements and pay evidence corroborating the annual figure. Freelancers should file 12 months of invoicing + matching bank credits; salaried applicants file payslips + employer confirmation of remote work.

  4. 4
Buy a compliant Italian health-insurance policy

The policy must be valid in Italy for the full stay, cover ≥ €30,000 in medical costs, and include hospitalisation and repatriation. Travel insurance does not qualify.

  5. 5
    Book the consulate appointment

Italian consulates have applied the DNV since April 2024. Appointment lead times vary by consulate (2–8 weeks for smaller posts, 2–4 months at major hubs).

  6. 6
Enter Italy and file the permesso within 8 days

The entry visa is Type D. Within 8 working days of arrival, submit the kit giallo permesso application at a Poste Italiane sportello amico for the permesso di soggiorno per lavoro autonomo — nomadi digitali; Questura biometrics follow within a few weeks.

  7. 7
Renew the permit and plan for long-term residence

Renewals are typically granted in 1-year blocks as long as the underlying remote-work, income and insurance conditions are maintained. After 5 years of continuous legal residence you may apply for permanent EU residency.

What does the Italy long-stay kit cost?

Most Italy relocation consultants charge €900–€1,500 for a long-stay file. Lawyers in Italy typically charge more for the same paperwork stage. SchengenDoc generates the same document set — motivation letter, monthly stay plan, financial-means statement and country-specific checklist — for a flat fee.

Italy Digital Nomad Visa — FAQ

What income do I need for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa in 2026?
Approximately €28,000/year — set at 3× the annual minimum income that exempts from Italian healthcare co-payment, under the Ministerial Decree of 29 February 2024. The exact figure moves with the underlying healthcare threshold; verify the current number at the Italian consulate when you book.
When did the Italy DNV actually become applyable?
The visa was created in law in 2022 but was legally defined without operational rules until the Ministerial Decree of 29 February 2024 was published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale and entered into force on 4 April 2024. From that date, Italian consulates accept DNV files.
Who qualifies as a highly skilled remote worker under the DNV?
The applicant must meet Italy's highly qualified worker test: a recognised university degree, a regulated-profession qualification, or at least 5 years of specialised experience in the same field. Generalist or low-skill remote roles are not eligible under this framework.
Can I bring my spouse and children on the DNV?
Yes. Family members (spouse and minor children) may be included at the initial application, or reunited later under the standard family-reunification (ricongiungimento familiare) procedure once the main applicant holds the permesso di soggiorno. The main applicant's income and accommodation must cover the family.
Can I work for Italian clients on the DNV?
No — the DNV is designed for remote activity performed for non-Italian entities. Working for Italian clients or an Italian employer is inconsistent with the visa's scope and requires a different work-authorising residence permit.
Italy DNV vs the Elective Residence Visa — which fits me?
Use the DNV when your primary income is active remote work for foreign employers or foreign clients — it explicitly authorises this activity and has a lower income floor (≈€28,000/year vs ≈€31,000/year for the ERV). Use the ERV when your income is genuinely passive (pension, dividends, rental) and you do not intend to work; the ERV bars all work in Italy, remote included in practice.
How long does the Italy DNV take end-to-end?
Consulate stage: typically 30–90 days from biometrics, faster at smaller posts. Post-arrival Questura stage: kit giallo filing within 8 working days; the permesso card is commonly issued 2–4 months later, though the receipt (cedolino) already legalises your stay. Total realistic end-to-end: 4–8 months.
Do I need an Italian tax number or bank account before applying?
The codice fiscale (Italian tax number) is commonly requested at the consulate; it can be obtained from the consulate itself or from the Agenzia delle Entrate on arrival. An Italian bank account is not a pre-visa requirement — you open one after obtaining the permesso di soggiorno, typically to pay rent and receive any Italian-sourced payments.
