Greece Digital Nomad Visa — remote-work residency in 2026

The Greek Digital Nomad Visa is a national long-stay (Type D) visa created by Law 4825/2021 for non-EU remote workers who provide services to non-Greek entities. It is issued for up to 12 months at a Greek consulate abroad, and can be converted on arrival into a 2-year residence permit for digital nomads that is renewable in 2-year blocks.

What is the Greece Digital Nomad Visa?

The Greek DNV was introduced by Law 4825/2021, which established the visa category, the income threshold, the qualifying remote-work definition and the pathway to a residence permit. The same law creates the residence-permit variant for applicants already legally in Greece.

Eligibility is narrow in one respect: the applicant's remote work must be for a non-Greek employer or non-Greek clients — no Greek-sourced professional income is permitted. It is broad in another: any activity that can be performed remotely qualifies (there is no highly skilled test as in Italy).

Holders may bring family members (spouse and minor children) on the same application by clearing the +20% (spouse) and +15%-per-child income adjustments. Qualifying remote workers who transfer their tax residence to Greece may benefit from a 50% income-tax reduction on Greek-source employment or self-employment income for the first 7 years of tax residence under Article 5C of the Income Tax Code — a separate regime from Law 4825/2021 that has its own eligibility conditions; verify with a Greek tax advisor before relying on it.

Financial requirements — 2026

Last verified: 2026-07-13 · figures cross-checked against the cited source on each row.

The €3,500/month figure is the codified minimum in Law 4825/2021 and is measured net of tax. Files that show gross income of €3,500/month without tax evidence commonly draw questions; the safe presentation is 12 months of bank credits showing ≥ €3,500 landing after tax, plus employer or client contracts.

The motivation / cover letter

The Greek consulate expects a formal letter tying together the remote-work activity, the €3,500/month income position, the accommodation, and the commitment to work only for non-Greek entities while resident in Greece. The letter should reference Law 4825/2021 by name so the consul recognises the specific visa framework being invoked, and it should state whether the applicant intends to convert the visa into the 2-year residence permit for digital nomads on arrival.

Step-by-step application

  1. 1
    Confirm consular jurisdiction

Apply at the Greek consulate covering your legal residence. US applicants in California file at Los Angeles or San Francisco; UK applicants file at London.

  2. 2
Assemble 12 months of income proof ≥ €3,500 net

Bank statements are the anchor: 12 months of credits from the foreign employer or foreign clients showing ≥ €3,500/month landing after tax. Payslips and tax returns support the bank record.

  3. 3
Draft the employer / client remote-work declarations

The employer letter must confirm (a) the remote nature of the role, (b) that the employer has no Greek establishment, and (c) authorisation for the applicant to work from Greece. Self-employed applicants provide equivalent client contracts.

  4. 4
    Buy compliant health insurance

The policy must be valid in Greece for the full stay, cover hospitalisation and repatriation. Travel policies do not qualify.

  5. 5
    Book the Greek consulate appointment

Book once your income, insurance and accommodation documents are in hand. Appointment slots at major consulates typically clear within 2–6 weeks.

  6. 6
Enter Greece on the Type D visa

The DNV is issued for up to 12 months and allows multiple entries. On arrival you may live and work remotely as of day one.

  7. 7
Convert to the 2-year residence permit (optional)

Within the visa validity you may apply at the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum to convert the Type D visa into the 2-year residence permit for digital nomads. Renewals in 2-year blocks are available as long as the underlying income and remote-work conditions continue.

What does the Greece long-stay kit cost?

Most Greece relocation consultants charge €900–€1,500 for a long-stay file. Lawyers in Greece typically charge more for the same paperwork stage. SchengenDoc generates the same document set — motivation letter, monthly stay plan, financial-means statement and country-specific checklist — for a flat fee.

Greece Digital Nomad Visa — FAQ

What income do I need for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa in 2026?
€3,500/month net (after tax) for the main applicant, +20% for a spouse (€700/month) and +15% per dependent child (€525/month). The thresholds are codified in Law 4825/2021 and unchanged for 2026.
Can I work for Greek clients on the DNV?
No. Law 4825/2021 explicitly requires the activity to be for a non-Greek employer or non-Greek clients. Taking Greek-sourced professional income is inconsistent with the visa and requires a different residence-permit route.
Is the visa 1 year or 2 years?
The entry visa (Type D) is issued for up to 12 months. Within that period you may apply at the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum to convert it into a residence permit for digital nomads that is issued for 2 years and is renewable in 2-year blocks, as long as you continue to meet the income and remote-work conditions.
Do I get a tax break as a Greek digital nomad?
Potentially — but the tax benefit and the visa are separate regimes. Article 5C of the Greek Income Tax Code offers a 50% reduction on qualifying Greek-source employment or self-employment income for the first 7 years of Greek tax residence to applicants transferring their tax residence to Greece. Eligibility conditions apply and interact with your prior tax residence status; consult a Greek tax advisor before relying on it.
Can I include my spouse and children on the same DNV file?
Yes. Family members may join at the initial application when household income clears +20% for a spouse and +15% per child on top of the €3,500 base. Each family member files their own forms; the main applicant's income and accommodation carry the file.
Do I need a Greek bank account before applying?
No. Income evidence is typically shown from your existing foreign bank account. A Greek bank account is opened after arrival — commonly needed to pay rent and, if you convert to the 2-year residence permit, to receive any Greek-side payments.
How long does the Greek DNV take end-to-end?
Consulate stage: typically 4–8 weeks from biometrics, faster at smaller posts. If you convert to the 2-year residence permit on arrival, add 2–4 months for the Ministry of Migration to issue the physical card, though the application receipt already legalises your stay while it is being processed. Total realistic end-to-end (visa in hand): 1–3 months.
Greece DNV vs Portugal D8 or Spain DNV — which fits me?
Greece is the lightest documentation load of the three and has the codified €3,500 net floor. Portugal's D8 has a higher threshold (~€3,680/mo, 4× SMI) and stronger EU-family/citizenship pathway after 5 years. Spain's DNV sits between the two (~€2,762–€2,850/mo, 200% SMI) but requires the strictest insurance standard. Pick Greece for speed and tax planning, Portugal for the citizenship pathway, Spain for a mainland European base with strong healthcare access.
