Portugal long-stay visa — FAQ
- What income do I need for the Portugal D8 digital nomad visa?
- The D8 threshold is set at 4× the Portuguese minimum wage (SMI). In 2026 the SMI is €920/month, giving a threshold of approximately €3,680/month. The figure may change with annual SMI revisions — verify the current threshold with AIMA or the Portuguese consulate when you book your appointment.
- Do I need a Portuguese bank account before applying?
- For the D7, yes — Portuguese consulates expect proof of a Portuguese bank account with funds covering at least the first months of stay. The account can be opened remotely through several Portuguese banks or via a fiscal representative once you obtain your NIF.
- Can my D7 income come from any country?
- Yes, as long as it is genuinely passive (pensions, dividends, rental, royalties) and consistent across the last 12 months. Active income from work in Portugal must instead be supported by a D2 or D3 route.
- How does the AIMA appointment work?
- After entering Portugal on the long-stay visa, AIMA (formerly SEF) schedules a biometrics appointment within the visa's validity period. At that meeting you collect the two-year residence permit. Waiting times can be several months, so book as early as possible.
- Do I need a real flight ticket for the long-stay visa appointment?
- For long-stay applications, consulates focus primarily on your accommodation contract, financial evidence, and purpose documentation. A flight reservation is a supporting document only — a verifiable one-way or onward booking (live PNR) is sufficient; a paid non-refundable ticket is not required. Submitting unverifiable documents can trigger refusal on grounds of false or misleading documentation under the applicable national visa rules of the destination country. Best practice is a hold-the-fare or refundable booking kept live until the decision. The SchengenDoc kit produces the monthly stay plan sample that accompanies your file.
