Schengen Visa for US Green Card Holders
A green card is US residence, not a passport. Whether you need a Schengen visa depends on the passport you travel on. If it is visa-required, you apply from the US with your green card as proof of residence. The adult consular fee is €90.

1. Check whether your passport needs a visa
The green card does not change the answer. Look up the passport you will travel on: check my passport. Visa-exempt passports need no visa for stays up to 90 days in any 180 (ETIAS from late 2026).
2. Apply in the US to the right consulate
Apply to the consulate of the country where you will spend the most nights, or with equal nights, your first point of entry. US consulates divide the country by state, so use the one covering the state on your green card address and driver's licence: find my consulate. Destination guides: France, Spain, Germany, Italy.
3. Green card holder evidence
- Passport with at least two blank pages, issued within the last 10 years and valid at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
- Copy of your green card, both sides, valid beyond your return date (or with a USCIS receipt notice extending it)
- Proof of your US address in the consulate's jurisdiction: driver's licence or state ID, lease or recent utility bill

- US bank statements for the last three months, plus recent pay stubs
- Latest IRS tax return or tax transcript

4. Keep your file consistent
Your green card, job, home and tax record show you will return to the US. Keep dates, addresses and amounts the same across the cover letter, itinerary and bank statements.

Frequently asked questions
Do US green card holders need a Schengen visa?
A green card does not exempt you from the Schengen visa requirement. The rule follows the passport you travel on: if your passport is on the Schengen visa-required list, you need a short-stay visa even with a green card. If your passport is visa-exempt, you travel without a visa (ETIAS from late 2026).
Where do I apply as a green card holder?
In the US, at the consulate of your main destination that covers the state you live in. Most consulates take applications through an outsourced visa centre such as VFS Global or BLS International. You do not need to return to your country of citizenship.
My green card expires soon or has expired. Can I still apply?
Consulates generally expect your US residence permission to remain valid after your return. If your card has expired and you have a USCIS receipt notice that extends its validity (for example after filing Form I-90 or I-751), include it with the card copy and confirm with your consulate before booking.
Do I need an airport transit visa with a green card?
Under the EU Visa Code, holders of a valid residence permit issued by the United States are exempt from the airport transit visa requirement when changing planes in a Schengen airport without leaving the international zone. Leaving the airport still requires a short-stay visa.
I have been outside the US for a long time. Does that matter?
Your green card is your proof of the right to return to the US. If you have been outside the US for close to a year or longer, US re-entry rules may require a re-entry permit; consulates may question your residence if your US ties look weak. Show your current US address, job and tax filings.
